Cameron’s Utopia

Movie Director, writer, producer, and editor James Cameron, calls himself a converted agnostic and claims to be vegan. So far, he divorced four times. Nothing in his life and work seems to point to sympathy for Catholicism. His famous movie Avatar (2009) is a case in point. The ‘good guy’, doctor Grace Augustine, dedicates her life to genetically mutating humanoid Na’vi bodies, such that they can be adopted by human beings. Not a very Catholic ideal, to say the least. On closer inspection of Cameron’s Avatar movie, however, Abaelardus felt compelled to reconsider his first impression. Cameron’s Avatar describes a Utopian society, close to what one usually associates with the Garden of Eden, though structured by at least five of the seven Sacraments.
